One suggestion would actually be to paint the whole eye on while your real eyes are in the closed position. Then when anyone wants a good look at your costume, or takes a picture, you just close your eyes and it all blends into the one big eye. I did something similar for Dr. Manhattan, and it worked like a charm without needing white contacts.
