We are doing Tulum with a Playa del Carem stop for lunch. Booked a private trip through THIS site and yes, they pick you up at the hotel. In my experience and based on my research, you get better value booking through this site rather than at the resort. Good luck!
I did a tour once that was a 3 part adventure. We were staying at Playa del Carmen at the time for our honeymoon, and it was zip lines, rappelling into a cave, swimming in a cenote, and a guided tour of the ruins. It was a fun day, like $100 each included transportation and lunch. If you are looking for a day like this on your vacation, then I would recommend booking a day to do it. Depending on how long your trip is, it might be a much needed mid-week breakup. The one negative thing about it though is it is an entire day. Leaving like 9 and back at like 6, with the hour of transportation each way. Personally I have already "been there done that", so I don't have to do it again. But if it is your first time, then go for it. Booking ahead is a good idea, but could be a bummer if you decide you don't actually feel like leaving the resort, or the weather that day is bust. Maybe there is something via this site that allows for flexibility on dates.
