We had a similar situation at TTR. The couple we traveled with had a heart attack at TTR. Both of us were nurses a suspected what was happening . My friend took here husband by cab to amerimed. They stopped treating him when her credit card maxed out. I finally got her on the phone and gave her my card #. At my insistence they had gotten travel insurance. My friend signed himself out of the hospital with I've drip running took it back to the hotel. Contacted the insurance co. They had a nurse case manager on it immediately they sent an ambulance, nurse and EMT to the hotel. Whisked him of to the airport took him to Miami. He spent about 4 days there. He had a lot of damage from the heart attack and will never be able to travel out of the country again but he survived. The travel insurance eventually paid back the Mexican hospital bill after couple months of paperwork. I shutter to think of the bill had they not gotten the insurance. I use squaremouth and always get medical and medevac coverage. I don't worry to much about the travel part. Actually TTR credited the 5 days they did not use and the airline flew them back from Miami on their original return tickets
If TTR still has your luggage maybe some kind Californian going to TTR can bring it back with them. The $25 per bag would certainly be worth it
OMG I had never seen this post. So sorry for your ordeal, how awful. I hope you both are doing OK now. Have you gotten your luggage back yet? Great tips... will check out the link. Steve, can I ask why you recommend this hospital? And how far is it from Temptation? If emergency services are needed, you can request what hospital you want? Awesome info! - Noting the numbers down now... ... (I came to search for travel insurance and got a lot of good info in this thread)
Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, im glad for the final positive outcome. I travel for my work to many countries Mexico included and always have had a policy that includes medivac. Im not sure what the costs are in other countries but it is less than $500 pa here in Australia.I know that for some thats not cheap but in the overall scheme of things its in my mind a necessity. I took out a policy for Lisa on our previous trips to TTR and they were about $150 per trip. Once again glad your hubby is ok
Thanks Steve. A few years ago you published a list of places for medical care. I sent you a PM asking you for a reprint, you sent it to me. I now travel to Cancun with that information in my pocket. It may be a good time for all to review your recommendations. I (we) value your input! This lady's reads as a critical care story anywhere in the world. He is lucky to have survived. Plavix is a good drug overall, one has to consider the options i.e., heparin, Coumadin, etc. All serious medications with serious side effects or adverse events given for serious conditions.
Thanks for sharing your experience and info. We get caught up in fun of trip and don't think about the what ifs!! Glad your situations were ok In the end but definitely life changing. Good info. Thanks
so sorry for the ordeal, glad he is okay and definitely getting insurance and phone numbers before leaving in 22 days
Make sure to read the fine print on the insurance policy's, most times pre existing condition will be covered as long as you get the insurance policy before 30 days after booking the trip. Insurance company's always word things in their favor, including the legally intoxicated clause. T
Sympathies... and Thanks! Wow, that is a terrible experience to have, so glad recovery is under way! You have my sympathies, and I admire your fortitude in handling this awful situation. And thanks for the reminder, I tend to be pretty lax for holiday insurance, even though I am OTT for general cover. A strong reminder to: 1. Spend the money, get good travel and health insurance. 2. Carefully check out what is actually covered. You have a pretty good idea of what you will be doing, so choose the package to suit your vacation and activities. Insurers seem love putting fine print clauses in to absolve payment, so go over it carefully. Especially with alcohol consumption... Remember where you are travelling to, and look at what medical facilities are available. No disrespect to Mexico, but the level of their healthcare isn't going to be the same as some other cities, so a medevac is desiable. Also a couple of tips I have found useful: Get cancellation insurance well ahead for your trip. This is invaluable if anything happens and you have to cancel or postpone. Also, use a well established broker or agent. They have so much more clout and you can get things done. I have dealt with multiple insurance claims for my business, the large broker we use has made every claim smooth and effective. My personal insurance was direct with a insurance company, the 2 claims I had were a nightmare. PS a bit shocked at the anti-Mexico comment posted!!!
