Can anyone recommend a company for travel insurance? Does anyone have an example insurance saving the day?
I used Square Mouth to view the different policies available. From what I have heard get PRIMARY not SECONDARY coverage because the doctors and hospitals can bill the primary insurance directly and not have to get your normal insurance carrier involved. If you our a member of Automobile Club they have it also whoever you booked your tickets through will have it also. American Express offers it so do other major credit cards
No more Plavix ever again for this big boy, they will just use aspirin as a blood thinner. As I had so much time waiting in the hospital I researched Plavix, yikes not a good thing lots of lawsuits out there. Cardiologist said you should only take Plavix and aspirin one year after a heart stent placement. My husband prior to this had a triple bypass in 2000, and 7 heart stents placed in 2006 so he should have had Plavix only until 2007 but he has been on it ever since. Doctors said it weakened the linings of the ephosoghas.
First, I am so happy to hear that your husband is OK. You both have to be in shock still. What a horrific experience to have to endure. My heart goes out to you. It sounds very familiar to an experience of someone I know well had to go through earlier this year. Having a situation like this hit so close to home, before our trip in May I looked into what it would take to have that Jet on standby. Dr Jane is known to be accident prone and I cant speak spanish. Normal travel insurance you buy from your booking website and your health insurance from home doesn't typically cover evacuation expense and if it does, it would only be reimbursement after the fact. In the case of my friend, they had to come up with money up front for "life saving" surgery. They were not in Cancun so the hospitals were truly third world. From the sound of it, the whole ordeal is going to cost them $30,000 even after their health insurance back home pays what it does. The kicker, is even after surgery there, a lengthy recovery stay in that country, the doctors back home had to open it all back up to clear infection and "fix" what was done. Dr Jane and I bought a policy through Global Rescue. We travel quite a bit and what I liked about these guys, is they are the guys with the jet. Whether that means I need it in Mexico or on a business trip (it kicks in 100 miles from home), they will haul you to your home hospital. If you are out of the states, they send an english speaking EMT to the scene or the local hospital you end up at, to translate, coordinate care and evacuation. (Disclaimer, this is not from experience, just from what I have read from the website and our policy) The cost was not really comparable to standard travel insurance. It doesnt cover lost luggage or hotel costs for things like weather. It was around $500 US for a years worth of family coverage. There are a number of stories on their website about getting people out of harms way in far more remote and dangerous places than the sexy pool. If anyone else has this insurance or knows someone who has had to use it, I would like to know how it worked out. Again, I am so sorry to hear this happened to you guys on vacation, but thank you for sharing your story.
Glad your husband is ok, sounds like an ordeal. I take Plavix too, so will be wary of the follow up advice. I cant help but wonder why so many Americans travel abroad without insurance when they would never not have it at home. Brits and Canadians seem to be the only ones who buy travel insurance religiously and they don't need it at home. The price of treatment your husband received in Mexico does not sound so bad, I wonder how much the same treatment would have cost in the US? Hospital fees and 20 ER doctors on arrival at what, $500 an hour? BTW If anyone ever needs Emergency care in Cancun, Hospital Galenia is the one I recommend. http://hospitalgalenia.com/
Wow! I am so sorry to hear this. So glad to hear he is doing better. What a scary situation to be in. God is amazing and he was definitely looking out for you guys! Prayers for both of you during his recovery time
That's seriously one of the worst things I've ever heard. Commencing shopping for traveler's insurance in 3, 2, 1 ...
