Kolnui: Sounds like a good way to start If its only for one week, the best and most comfortable way to go about it, would probably be to look for a hotel in the downtown area. My mom and brother avoided the Hotel Zone when they came to visit and had heaps of choices regarding cheaper hotels in the Centro. Id go for that, as it would be tough to find a rental only for a week(most people that let flats, wants you to provide a visa other than the tourist one and the hassle of dealing with some locals might actually kill your entire week...) The is certainly no shortage of decent hotels downtown. That way, you can get service, feel safe and not worry about getting scammed or living in a shabby flat, and just stroll around and get to know the city better Best of luck and let me know how things go and if theres anything I/we can do to help
