If you prefer Pesos, we get Pesos in advance from AAA and you can get any denomination you prefer. Usually takes them 2 biz days. We bring both USD and Pesos but tip almost entirely in Pesos. I do get the only tipping in USD when you are drunk.
BTW, unless things have changed, I wouldn't go anywhere near that ATM in the hotel. There have been many reports in the past of it being compromised. There is (at least was a year ago), a true "bank" ATM out the door and to the left (if you're facing the street). There's a small convenience store and on one side of it there's a separate entrance with an ATM inside the door. We also go to our local bank ahead of time and just get the 1's, 5's, etc. for our trip - that way when we're there we normally never worry about getting change...of course it looks like we're headed for a strip club when leaving the bank with all the 1's!
As an added note (I work at a bank), most banks allow you to select small, large or mixed bills when you order foreign currency. So you can skip having to break them down as much by ordering small bills.
I did mixed and it was mixed just a mix of 500s 200s a few 100s and a couple 50s and 20s lol next time I will do small hehe
I never seem to bring enough $1 & $5 with me so I just hit up one of the bartenders when I'm running low and have them change out a $50 for me. If you ask them a few hours into their shifts they always have plenty of small bills. They always seem happy to do it so they don't have as big a wad of cash to carry home.
I suppose TTR is somewhat of a closed universe so to speak. Money can neither be created nor destroyed, it just changes form (denomination)! Hey, I think someone may have written a law of physics similar to this long ago.
Where is the ATM in the hotel? I'd recommend against the ATM in the shop across the street. It was crazy expensive, charges a hefty fee+percentage of the withdrawal. I usually hit the ATM at the airport. The make change for smaller bills at front desk. We also bring a wad of $1, $5 USD.
Don't use the ATM in the hotel - it has been compromised in the past. I agree with the one across the street but there's a tiny convenience store just south of the hotel on the same side of the street. Attached to the building is a separate entrance with a dedicated bank ATM (not 3rd party). I want to say it was either Banamex or Santander.
