    don't use credit cards...

don't take huge amounts of cash

US $$ or pesos accepted all over.. just get to know the conversion beforehand so you make sure you get the right change.

change for $US will be made in Pesos.

Use the ATMs..they are all over and you'll get a better exchange rate than if you exchange your $US For pesos at your hotel. ATMs will dispense Pesos.

why .. when capital one lets you use them without any conversion fees

Thats where they try to screw you, is in the change. Its better to use pesos.

My bank charges a conversion fee , on top of the ATM fee. So this might be safe, but it can be expensive.

But then I have been to other countries, except for Cancun :) and Don is an expert..

I mostly use my credit card for dinners and hotel. Maybe if we're going all out at club, but rarely. I only use an insured card. I've had to reverse many charges on a couple of my returns.

As of the last few years, I give my CC company advanced notice of when I'm traveling to either Mexico or DR. They issue a second credit card which is only valid for my trip plus a day or two in case I get stuck. It's been easier than reversing charges.
