I never had this particular problem, but the bottled water at TTR is just purified water which probably has no mineral content at all, so you may not be replacing the electrolytes lost. It is the bottled carbonated water known as "agua mineral" that is high in sodium but the "agua mineral" at Diego's and the other main bars served from the gun is just gasified purified water.
For good hydration, try coconut water, ("Agua de Coco") it has a good potassium to sodium ratio.
There is also a product called "Electro-Mix" which comes in sachets and you mix one into a liter bottle of water. Made by the same people as Emergen-C vitamins but I haven't seen it stocked in many places other than Whole Foods Market where they have it in the sports section

It's the very high salt content of the food prepared everywhere in Mexico my doc told me. He goes down there quite a bit for vacations, to visit family, and to do charity work, so I think he knows about it. Not the actual Mexican food, but the food prepared for tourists to increase the flavor.

He gave me a diuretic that I can take when my ankles get swole-up, works great. I take it maybe once on the trip, about day 3, and I'm good for about 2-3 days more. Repeat as necessary.

I always have swollen ankles/feet, but they usually get worse in Mexico. I think it's a mixture of flying, the heat/humidity, alcohol and salty food. I'm on water pills for blood pressure, but it doesn't help my feet. We're in Cancun right now and my feet aren't that bad this time. I made sure to move my feet around a lot on the plane. Apparently you should walk around about once an hour if you can. Also, don't cross your legs. It will cut off your circulation and make swelling worse. I've been drinking lots of water too, so that helps.

    Me too

    Mel,
Last year, the day after you guys left, my feet swelled up so big I couldn't even leave the room. Nothing like that had ever happened to me before. I put my feet up in the air, on pillows, on the wall; Tracy even went to the bar and filled up a small trash-can full of ice for me. I hydrated and tried to baby them for the rest of the trip. The pain was almost bad enough to go to the ER, they looked like giant water-balloons. The swelling finally came down after a couple days. Likely related, 2 days after I got back from the trip, I came down with a severe infection under one of my large toe-nails and had to go to the hospital and have surgery to remove the infection and the nail. Stupid feet...

This year I'm wearing compression socks on the plane and before I go to bed, and getting something from my doctor in case its as severe as last year.

Take some anti inflammatory and drink a lot of water, we got that on one of our visits there as well was due to too much alcohol drinks and fun in the sun and not enough water.

Do you drink margaritas? That REALLY does it to me. Other than that, just high sodium content in general.

FYI, had the same issues this year. I decided to try taking some lasix this year (I know I'll probably get some shit from some of the Dr's on here). I took 20 mg/day for 2 days and by the third day it was still getting worse. Ended up just having to take a night off from PatyO's with the compression socks on and it got me through the rest of the trip. But if anybody could rock a pair of high heels with compression socks on and still look sexy as hell, it would be you!
