I have Verizon for my cell phone and we switch it to the international Mexico plan. It runs about $10 for the week. It prorates the month for calling. BE CAREFUL WITH DATA. The data is expensive and if your phone roams it will charge you. Be sure to turn off the data otherwise it gets stupid expensive. My sister left hers on for the first three days with Verizon before turning it off. $700 phone bill she negotiated it to 100 because she had the Mexico plan and stated she did not know about the data plus she did not really use it. They alot you minutes and you can send and receive calls. Its a no brainer, wife has AT&T for work and they switch it for her. She even gets data down there so she gets email and all. Not sure how they work it out though. Call your carrier most have a Mexico/International plan. Set the date to start and call them to stop it when you return. It's that easy.
Yes, at the resort they give you a password but..it doesnt work in all the rooms.. to far away I guess.. we were in the 5000 block and it didnt work..
So theoretically all you need is the day's password to get the wi-fi in the lobby area. Sounds like this system can be manipulated to benefit CCC patrons who are willing to work together. Wink wink.
Our login and password was our room number, so it can be manipulated very easily. HOWEVER when we were there last year it only let one person online at a time. I have heard from someone else that multiple people could login at once.
I know when we get there on May 4 we will be looking around to see who is using Wi-Fi, and then compensate them for their password in one way or another.
We usually get the wifi every second or third day. IF (and with many of you I see it is a big "if") you only need to know if the house burned down, etc, then if you have a 3G-capable Kindle, you can get on the internet via the "experimental" browser for free. I have a Kindle 2nd generation--the good-old non-backlit dedicated E-reader. It is 3G only but the 3G works in numerous countries. The "web browser" is strictly experimental and really only good for text-only website. But the good thing is, there is a decent Gmail function. So we tell whoever is watching the kids that we will call every other day or two, but will check our email numerous times a day. If something important came up and we didn't have the wifi already active, then of course we would pay the $15 to activate it and Skype call home. We just don't feel like paying $15 every day when we don't plan on calling home every day. Your mileage may vary.
all this makes me feel grateful that our son is 18 and lives at the gym or in his car (well not literally of course!). Not saying that this actually saves us any money mind, I'm sure the "dad, you know I love you...." (translation: my gas tank is empty!) costs at least as much as all the calls home!!
