I actually wouldn't call it common. It happens sure. Will you stumble across one? ...very possible, maybe even likely. Level of exposure depends on the situation. I do think the frequency is maybe a little overblown as you hear about the great stories on here but that doesn't mean that stuff happens every night. I am searching our trip reports trying to find a fun story about one of our trips. Hopefully I can find it. If not I will retell by memory as best I can.
you need to shrink the size. there are apps for that. Or what is even easier and tends to sometimes work is just open up the photo on your phone, select edit and then use the square icon to change the size of the photo, maybe making it zoom. This tends to optimize and shrink the size of the photo on your phone and then make it small enough to upload.
