Day trip sounds good, we were looking at 3 day trips, one to the ruins....was looking at Chichen Itza, but maybe Tulum, one of the places with the zip lines, and a swim with the dolphins.....but have not committed to anything yet, figure we would wait and see what everyone else is doing, feel it would be more fun with others from TTR.:cheerleaders:
We took a day trip to Isla last year she went snorkling and I sat on the beach and drank rum, very quiet and relaxing, (I don't do the submerged in a large body of water thing) Was a fun trip, but not sure I need to go back again Did the ruins of Tulum on cruise once that was very cool, anyone who hasn't seen ruins needs to do that once in their life. We are planning on the Friday night booze cruise on Feb 5 and maybe a trip with resort guests to Coco bongo depending on the night.
Ruins Hi, if you are contemplating between Tulum and Chechin Itza, there is no comparison in size, scope and quality. Chechin Itza is simply stunning while Tulum is good.
We did Chichen Itza last year and although it was very intersting to climb and look at the ruins it did take all day ...swam in a cave and did the rappeling & zip line thing. Stoped by the military 3 times on the way there searched the van and personal belongings once. Quite possibly the longest and driest day in history and spent the majority of time driving in the van...it was such a long drive we didnt think we were ever going to get back to the resort... The drive may have seemed so long beacause I was deathly car sick both ways and I never get car sick! But all in all it was excellent the activities that you did with a lot of great pics. If I recall we left at 700 AM and returned about 700 pm
Although we have heard that the ruins are amazing, we have heard this scenerio before. We did Tulum and thought that day was LONG ENOUGH! (5 hours). Tulum was nice and was by the ocean. It only ate up part of the day. However I understand from people who have done both that there is no comparison between the ruins experience between the two. You just have to be willing to endure the very long ride both ways. This will be our sixth time to Cancun and have never been willing to kill the entire day.
It is an all day-er, when we went we went in a very comfortable new bus, we were gone from 9am to 5 pm and did not really have enough time at the ruins (we did have time to stop a predetermined tourist trap gift store). A friend of mine did something different and I thought it was brilliant. If 2 couples want to go you pool your money (that you would have payed for the tour) and get a cab. His advice was sound, do not just start negotiating with any cab, go to the cab stand and spend 10 to 20 minutes talking to the drivers and figure out which one speaks good English, and has some knowledge of the history and seems like a nice guy. Then negotiate with him for a full day fair. In the end you will pay about the same or just a bit more, go direct to the site and have a tour guide. His guiding quality will be based on how well you pick but this has worked great for numerous people we know. You then leave on your schedule and come home on your schedule and bypass the time killing tourist traps.
Our thoughts too...we are about to take trip #5 and have never wanted to be gone for the entire day. We enjoy the resort way too much. Maybe some day...when we finally take our kids to Cancun and we can't stay at TTR.
