Actually, when I submitted my renewal on Monday, they said "FM2"...

My 4th prorroga with the good old FM3 was the one Ive been waiting for for about a year, and they advised me that "after 4, you have to switch to FM2".

Would be great if their staff could start with the new terms as well, hehe ;)

She explained that I will have the "FM2" until I renew next year, since my renewal was due before 12th of November(when the change supposedly kicks in).

Will be interesting to see how it all goes. Is anyone up for the new one this year?

If so, please let us know about it.

My renewal date is 9th December.

After 4 years on FM 3 and almost qualifying for citizenship, they changed the rules and I had to start from scratch with an FM2. After 4 yrs with an FM2 I qualified for citizenship and now they've changed the rules again.

Unbelievable that after 8 years living here with a Mexican wife, and 2 Mexican kids I'm still at the point of having to renew every year - and possibly starting from scratch again.

I have a different take on it, Steve.

It looks to me like you are eligible for permanent residence, with no expiration date on your new migratory document, and with permission to perform any lawful activity, including remunerative work, without having to ask for permission from INM.

I, for one, am going to email Mauricio for clarification - because we are each just surmising about our differing situations. Myself, I am on an FM3 that expires in March each year. Here's the thing: my wife never bothered to get an FM3. Eventually she planned on it, and maybe now's the time. The question is: should she do it this month - prior to implementation of the new law, or apply in December, or at the time I renew mine in March, or after my "new-FM3" is approved?

    TJ, don't worry; I still say "xeroxed"......lol

I don't make a habit of surmising; instead, I read the regulations. For example, my observation about Steve's situation is based solely on what Steve said on this thread, and my reading of the regulations.

Under the new regulations, Steve has multiple grounds for claiming permanent residency, on the plain language of the new regulations. There is no magic to this, and anyone who wants to take the time and trouble to read the regulations- with the help of Google Translate, if necessary- can see for themselves what they say.
Consulting with Mauricio is always a good idea: I've done it myself.

The main advantage of applying for temporary residency under the new regulations, which is very close to what you have with your FM3, is that it can be good for four years if you request it under the new rules, and meet the qualifications. Both you and your wife can join in the application at the time of your renewal.

    Rawkus asked:
Many people will be, including me.

There are also a lot of Visitante Rentistas who will be eligible for permanent residency under the new rules, and they'll be looking closely at that option.

For those with some wealth to protect, they will want to consult with counsel about the possible tax consequences to their taking permanent residency, in Mexico.

What I would respectfully ask, V, is: might you be surmising that this will be the case under the new law? I think you might, but I will tell you in due course; my aforementioned email to Mauricio should have landed on his desktop by now, and he will know. I would suggest everyone do likewise, but to each his own. Crazy days lie ahead, methinks.

Davisod, you are quite the respectful guy. Lol. What else could be expected of one who xeroxed his last FM3 documents.

As I said earlier, it's not necessary to surmise when it's possible to read the regulations.

Your comment is puzzling, frankly, given that the regulations have been published, online, and anyone who wants can read them, themselves.

The new regulations are superior to the old in a number of ways, and many will want to take advantage of them; for example, you may find permanent residency the better option, all things considered.

Whatever you decide on that question, there are also the obvious, practical reasons to wait until your renewal date for her to apply- this will put you both on the same cycle of renewals, making it more convenient, dealing with them at the same time of the year.

Here's what Mauricio emailed back: "It's no clear yet, as some rules regarding the new procedure are pending of publication, but after november 9th only people who are linked to a mexican citizen or a foreigner with a resident status (this is your case) would be able to change their status, but we don't know yet the requirements and costs of the procedure."
