    leaving cell phones at home, we frankly don't want to be connected to the world while we are on vacation

    Well I took a look at my Verizon bill online after returning home and our phones were updating while we were down there even though we always selected to not get updates or data.
    So we ended up signing up for a plan for 10 days to cover our problem.
    Here is what the Verizon gal told me to do in the future , for the Droid 2, to turn off data.
    Go to settings, Data Manager, Data Delivery and "unclick" the Data Enabled check mark. This will allow you to text and get calls but most likely not picture text.
    Yes you should call Verizon and turn on international calling. We do not sign up for any international calling plan just a quick call home, costs about a dollar a minute. International texts were about 25 cents to get and 40 cents to send each (rates from last year, not sure about this year)
