Cancun isn't going to get Dean's worse my any standards. It's set to make landfall near the Chetumal area which is near the border of Belize...about 240 miles or so from Cncun. But since it's a cat 5 now those poor people are in for it and it's an area that is populated with mostly wooden houses and structures unlike the concrete buildings you see in Cancun. It's not a tourist area so I'm not sure how quickly they'll recover without those tourist $$$$'s. Right now Dean's effect on Cancun has arrived..strong winds, lighning and rain. The power is on for the moment still but that may not last long. The resorts did not evacuate and for the most part many have only a few number of guests compared to the numbers that were there just a few days ago. Cancun learned a lot from Wilma and it's evident that they are putting that knowledge to use. It will be a long night for those in Cancun but I suspect an even longer night for those in the southern part of the Yucatan.
Yep, I was watching the live broadcasts this morning from cancun, high wind and rain, but NOTHING like when wilma came through. I think the biggest damage they are facing is how the beaches held up after the surf pounded in.............so..............wait and see I guess.
The airport reports 20,000 left on Sunday and another 12,000 yesterday. I just talked to someone in Cancun and the winds are still very strong but no floooding where he is. Looking outside his window he can't see any real damage other than some brnches blown down etc.
Good to her karan, now lets let the sun come up and see how everything looks later in the day, after the rain and winds are over! I sure hope the beaches are intact!
