I've been through a cat 4 hurricane. Definitely hair raising and dangerous, but almost always less than the panic porn industry pushes. Wonderful of the authorities to have and execute a plan to keep everyone safe.
Also happy to see some reports that most of the damage is superficial and excited to get back down there in a few weeks

Hello Steve - We're newbies, one visit to TTR in April 2019. LOVED it. BUT we goofed - didn't go on the Boobs Cruise. What a mistake!

Reading this post about the hurricane brings up questions: Did people not have time to book flights to get out of there? Or did they wait til' the last minute? As a former first responder, I/we like to plan for circumstances like these. If it could be avoided, I personally would like to get out of there for: a) Our own safety b) avoid the panic that can come from 'escaping' groups of people, and having been in those shoes I don't like to be a burden to first responders, shelters, etc.

You live there, have seen plenty of theses, what would your advice be to TTR visitors who encounter a situation such as this?

    Thanks!

We were there - they made the announcement about having to evacuate us to an elementary school inland just before kicking off the party at Bash. After that announcement, we all started working on finding flights out the next day which proved to be almost impossible. We were fortunate to find seats on a flight out Tuesday night as the storm was coming in. We were the last flight out of Cancun on Tuesday night that left around 8:45 PM or so after many delays. We were supposed to come home today (Thursday) but didn’t want to risk it. Some friends of ours did not make it out and sent photos from the school they were sheltered in and sounds like they were well taken care of by the resort staff and playmakers. Props to the resort and staff for being so prepared. We watched them tear everything down and put everything away through the day on Tuesday before we left for the airport. It was weird to see the pool completely empty of people and all furniture, speakers and tables all gone at Bash, etc. Strange feeling for sure but they definitely got the resort hurricane ready. The staff there, as always, was amazing through this - so positive. Thankful it weakened before landfall and able to reopen so quickly! Can’t wait to get back next year and get a full vacation in. 2020 strikes again!

I’m arrived today. There is a little bit of cosmetic damage at the resort, but nothing major. Within Cancun, there is several large trees that have fallen, some electrical lines are down, and all of the billboards are gone, except for the frames.

As for the resort, it is going strong. The pool was a visual wonderland. The partying is nonstop. TTR is back to normal in one day.

I've been in Cancun for 16 years, and in the 20 years I've been a Temptation fan the resort has only evacuated twice. Once in 2005, the other this week. So, it is a very rare once in 10 year event, I haven't experienced 'plenty'. We do have smaller storms and hurricane near misses a few times a year but almost all of those don't necessitate hotel evacuation.

Delta was very fast forming. Monday morning it was a tropical depression, by Monday evening it was a Cat 2 Hurricane. Tuesday lunchtime it was forecast as a Cat 4. It hit 5am Wednesday.

This means there was only one clear day (Tuesday) for people to make arrangements to go home, and only one afternoon after Cat 4 forecast. There were 40,000 tourists in Cancun and simply not enough flights for everyone to get home, even if they wanted to. It was an event that couldn't be foreseen until the last minute and couldn't have been avoided by those here at the time. Rushing to an airport having no flight booked is the worst thing people can do.

Cancun has procedures in place for full evacuation of tourists to safe places. both times they have been enacted they have run like clockwork. No one is a burden.

You take your chances when you come during hurricane season. But considering most people come for a week and a situation like this happens once every 10 years the chance of it happening to you or any other individual is always slim, but obviously not impossible.

Yes, Wilma (2005) was a bitch and remnants from it can still be seen around town if you know what to look for.
