It is funny you guys are talking about this bcuz during the first quarter Marilyn and I agreed the Niners entire uniform, except the gold helmet (that they copied from Notre Dame) looked horrid. Reminded me of the old Ottawa Rough Riders or a poor district high school team. Maybe they got them second hand from some Div. III college who upgraded.
No Sheldon, the 49ers didn't copy Notre Dame. Their name comes from the gold miners that struck gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills in 1849 triggering the gold rush. San Francisco was their base of operations. Sourdough bread came from San Francisco as well because it would stay fresh longer for the miners and the climate there was so conducive to creating the dough. Hence the 49ers gold helmets, their cheerleaders being called the gold rush and their mascot is an old miner named Sourdough Sam.
Well John....explain the fact the niners had silver helmets up until '64 and the Fighting Irish have always had gold domes? (The Irish first played football in 1887) And I might add ND actually have 24ct gold flakes in the paint on their helmets taken from the re-gilding of the dome on campus, which happens about every 7 to 10 years. This info is pretty well known and steeped in lore. The gold flakes has been applied longer than SF has had a pro football team. So sorry I must stand by my original statement, as I always have, since the 60's....the Niners copied ND's gold helmet. Grandpa was a massive Irish fan and I watched dozens of ND games back in the day.

Given the 49ers legacy, gold is the natural choice of color. And one that was made 51 years ago. I don't know, or care if there are any other teams out there with gold helmets but I do know that with 32 NFL teams and 100's of college teams there is going to be some duplication of color. There are only so many available you know. So, to say that the 49ers copied Notre Dame is rather presumptuous. Hmmm.....Maybe the gold helmets are why Joe Montana came to San Francisco and became the G.O.A.T. LOL He chose to stay in the Bay Area though.
atleast the Vikings are pretty much the only squad ive seen wear Purple. probably a college team or 2 but cant think of any. Niners and Notre Dame both look great in Gold though!
