Steve is absolutely correct. In my opinion, it all depends upon the level of competency of your artist. Some have heavy hands, some light, the deepness of your tattoo is what is important here. Bottom line, if your tattoo is healing with absolutely perfect smooth skin, you are in the clear, tan away. If it is in any way bumpy, or scabbing, you cannot punish it with the sun, you will ruin your tattoo forever.
Go big or go home. Couldn't decide what "small" tattoo I wanted. Since I was warned Id become addicted to getting ink I went with the one tattoo that has always meant something with plenty of time in the chair
Ed hardy makes a tattoo protective tanning stick that is waterproof and SPF 50 so that may be something to consider looking at
