The card/room key has a slot just inside the door by the light switch, not actually in the door. It is an energy saving initiative, whereby the lights and AC only work with the card inserted in the slot. The idea being, of course, that if you left the room you would have you card with you and so the lights and AC can't be left on.

We've seen this in hotels in France and Spain for years now, and it's being adopted in North America as well. Most recently we saw it at Tulalip Resort in Seattle.
