garrapatas?!? Isn't that ticks? I didn't know ticks were in the heat down there?

    What is Sarna?

Yes, garrapatas are "ticks" and they are a big problem in Cancun. Even with frequent applications of Front Line my dog will end up with some of those nasty critters on her neck. "Sarna" is mange, again a big problem in Cancun, mostly with all the street dogs.

Eek! OK, tell me a little more. Is there anything I can do for a little monster before we go out there? I'm starting with a haircut - I'm sure his long hair will only attract problems.

Yes, haircut for sure (my poor girl has long hair too) and a Front Line application. Some months are worse than others but I don't know if there is necessarily a season for them or just outbreaks. Keep your grass cut and garden clean, keep them out of long grass when walking. Usually doing a monthly Front Line application is enough, unless there is a huge outbreak in the city. My Lola hasn't had any for months now, but I check her daily.

Just an FYI...Frontline is crazy $$ even in the states. Yesterday we bought 2 treatments (1 each for our girls) for $365 pesos. If you go to Walmart.com they have the Hartz brand for $4.66 usd for 3 months. We bought a year supply for both girls for like $40 usd and will have it brought down.

So, after all it was food allergy, accompanied by a fungus that is causing him to scratch like mad.

Now he is on cortisone and antibiotics, and starting a "fungus shampoo" treatment tomorrow.

@Roxie: Yes, ticks, fleas and mange are all very common here, along with heartworm.

@Cancun Fun: Have to ask: The dogs in your picture - pits? :)

Oh my Lord, Leo had TONS of ticks when we lived there. He was also diagnosed with heartworm which I'm pretty sure he picked up in Cancun based on the timing.
