We were there a few days ago, and there were no carts available anywhere. We tried about 5 rental shops. So we took a taxi to the beach on the north side for 30 pesos. Then there was a spot on the east side of the island we wanted to take photos at and took another taxi for 50 pesos, but had the taxi wait 15 minutes for us and drive us to another scenic spot and we paid 120 pesos. Then we caught another taxi back to the center and shopped a little and ate and walked pack to the ferry. Total price for the taxies was about 220 pesos versus 550 quoted at the shops for the golf carts. Plus, we cruised around a lot faster and didn't have to leave our drivers license with anybody or worry about the return that they don't find any mysterious damage. It worked out pretty well, so something to consider. The taxies are official (red color with markings). They aren't metered, so be sure to agree on a price before getting in. All the drivers spoke enough English for us to communicate with, as we only speak a few polite words in Spanish.
