    ok, my Uncle's a professor which means he's dead clever and here's what he says!

    this is an example of what i think is called the remainder fallacy. essentially you are using an inappropriate mathematical formula which gives an erroneous solution. in other words you are posing an illogical question based on the 'one pound back' hypothesis, which - not surprisingly - gives you an unsatisfactory answer. this can be demonstrated algebraically.

    (10x + 10x + 10x ) - 3x (refund) - 2 x (charity) = 25x. plus a fiver = 30 quid.
