Thanks again Steve I really think this is being extorted by the news media. We are coming rain or shine! Terry
That totally sucks that your job effects you personal time off. I am in the medcal field as well and it does not effect what I do. I am the Safety officer and work with the local hospital Infection and Epidemilogy as well as the regional and state people and they have not limited people here. I am so sorry that it effects your work, you are so sweet and careing. Good luck with it all. We really would love to see you two again. It's just the Flu and you probably will see some of this regardless. Take Care Don and Pam
The WHO has raised the threat level to 4 and advise not to travel to Mexico except in essential circumstances, this is the advice the FCO has given too. I will speak to Jules and our travel agents today but it seems we may be having to cancel. Oh Dear, the first long haul holiday we have ever booked and this happens.
I'm in Cancun...and glad I'm here. I only feel sorry for those who let sensational headlines ruin their vacation. Although it makes better ratings to focus on issues like this, let's look at a bit of reality. There have been no deaths in the US (last I heard), yet in a normal year, 5-20% of the U.S. population gets the flu, over 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu-related complications, and approx 36,000 people in the U.S. die from flu-related causes. These are not numbers I made up, but come directly from a little organization I like to call the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They post these numbers at: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/keyfacts.htm Neither the World Health Organization, the Mexican Government, nor the U.S. Government say the high school students picked this up in Cancun (and none list Cancun as a source). They could have picked it from a passenger or any number of other sources. All reports I heard stated the high school students cases were considered mild (according to the NYC Mayor). The first reported swine flu in the U.S. was on March 28th, so this is not the first case. As far as having contact with staff, pretty much everyone in the U.S. has some contact directly or indirectly with someone who has recently been to Mexico. I would also be interested to find out where those high school kids went. Even if they did pick it up here, we are not going to be frequenting the same places. At least when I was in high school, most of my classmates would have been looking for things that could not be acquired in the places we go. As for the airlines, they are allowing the changes just as they do during any weather event or any other issue that would cause bad press or possible litigation. As someone with almost 2 million miles on a single airline alone, I would not read anything into it. The CDC knows far more than the airlines and is a much better source of information. This is an issue that needs to be watched, but at this time, there are too many other things that are more likely to happen...especially once we take the standard precautions used to avoid any flu and the canceling of our club trips. I encourage everyone to evaluate the facts and make your decision based on the real facts. As long as you're comfortable with the decision you make, then you made the right one!
Looks like we'll not be going on Thursday, UK flights to Cancun have been cancelled today, cant see them operating again for a while until this all blows over GUTTED
It's not us ruining our holidays it's the media and the panic they have set in everyone around us that may ruin our holiday. Who wants to be treated like you have leporsy when you get home or be made to feel bad cause you actually went on your vacation. It's all bull and it pisses me right off.
As the search continues for the bright side: "Amid the alarm, there was a spot of good news. The number of new cases reported by Mexico's largest government hospitals has been declining the past three days, Cordova said, from 141 on Saturday to 119 on Sunday and 110 Monday." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30398682/
I have been thinking about the situation with Canada and the UK with this Flu. I think do the fact of these countries having national health care, it will cost the government money if they do not stop flights or restrict people. The US does not have a national healthcare and insurance covers it which does not affect Government as much. That's my reasoning and I think it makes sense to me. Don
Is anyone else worried that once we're down there that they won't let people back into the U.S. from Mexico?
