dont forget the time change at some airports. I Did not think about it till I Got into Dallas from Toronto and was rushing around the Dallas airport for my connecting gate when I noticed the clock on the wall. lol. one hour difference, so we had 2 hour layover. we will never do connecting flights again. to much b.s. Weither pay the extra for a direct flight. Check Sunquest vacations was the cheapest I found from Toronto.
Similar(ish) question; If us Brits want to fly somewhere with a layover in the US do we have to have a visa for the US (as we would if visiting) or can we just "travel through"? :daisy:
Since I'm in Toronto and have flown back from Cancun to Toronto via connections in Atlanta, Charlotte, Cleveland, Chicago, etc what I said is accurate - but a PITA  - so the OP should be prepared for it....
I would assume you'd have to go through whatever process you would normally have to do in order to get into the USA. Once you land at a terminal you'd be free to walk out as if you were staying over for a period of time, so they'd probably want to make sure you were not likely to do something bad before letting you through!
Coke It depends on which airline and which airport. Some give you a sticker on your boarding pass so that you do not have to pickup and recheck bags. If you change airlines into and out of the US you have to. Nothing is as it seems it should be!
As an American citizen of Canadian descent, i would be happy to write you a note so that you can skip all of this customs baloney. Al
Since the OP is flying in and out of Toronto, all can offer is our experiences doing the YYZ>CUN>YYZ route via the US thru various cities..... maybe they treat Canuck left coasters differently Bottom line is if you are returning to Canada via a US stop over you will have to clear US customs and immigration when you land in the US (no exceptions). It doesn't matter if your rushing to make a flight connection, lineups plus the actual customs and immigration process can conspire to screw you up unless you leave adequate time.
In terms of baggage, I have had to do both (pick it up and drop it off or just keep going and wait for it back in good ol Canada). It really does depend on the airline. The easiest thing to do is ask a customer service rep at the airport.
Well this seems way too complicated! I found another flight for the same price that is direct there and has an overnight layover in Montreal on the way back. It's only $85 for a hotel with free airport shuttle, so I might just do that and save myself the worry of stopping in the U.S. on the way there/back. Otherwise it would be $400 more for direct flights both ways.
