he couple of miles thing is as the crow flys its about 20 to 25 minutes drive...I wont tell you the best way to go... I just know I take a taxi. The clean ones with the green stripe and no one bothers me...I haggle them down to 25 bucs each way nd I get there faster than the shuttle.. Which seems to tke forever because they stop at other resorts..

It's probably more like 15 miles by road.

Taxis aren't legally allowed to pick up at the airport. They can drop off, so the chance of you finding one who just dropped someone off is pretty good - and of course they wont turn down a fare.

I'm not sure, but since they're not supposed to be picking up there I wonder as to the status of their insurance.

Taxis here are hit and miss, mainly miss. Unless you know the correct fare then chances of you getting ripped off are high. For example from the party center to TTR (approx 5 miles) I would pay no more than 70 pesos, about $6. Most drivers will try and get $20 or more - and many people tip on top of that!

    Taxis

    Steve,

That is awesome info on the Taxi's and tourist rates? Having never been to Cancun, where is that party central area that you mentioned for $6? In that case also, what are the reasonable taxi rates to/from TTR to downtown area and deep hotel zone? It's usually like that many places with tourism. I'm hoping that knowing the local rates (from you, of course) and speaking fluent Spanish (I'm from Honduras) will help in some cases. Any other tips also?

    Re: Taxis

Once you are @ TTR the reasonable rate is the bus. 70 cents from TTR to party central, hotel zone, market 28 or any other place you want to go in Cancun. That is one way. 70 cents back.

Best thing to do really is take the bus.

If you do take a taxi dont take the ones in the hotel parking lot, or at any kind of taxi stand, say outside a club or restaurant. Always flag one down, it's better if you're on the side of the road you are heading for as the returns are often quite a way.

Always agree the price at the start of the journey and not the end. Never ask "how much?" once you get there! If the first driver tries to charge too much then say no thank you and flag the next. It will take seconds before another arrives.

You dont need to tip (they're not expected) unless the driver does something extra like helps with bags or stops at the ATM for you etc.

Every taxi that drops off at TTR their number is recorded by the concierges in case of any problem, therefore always make sure the taxi drops you at the front entrance so this happens.

Taxi from the hotel to downtown should be no more than 60 pesos, but the bus is almost as fast, probably safer and easy.

Is there any kind of map or anything that can be found online for the bus schedule?

last may for the first time after 12 trips to cancun, we had a cab driver that tried to ripp us off. picked him up outside of TTR and at Sr Frogs he tried to charge us 195 pesos. had to argue with him for 5 minutes before he took a resonable amout. of course my fault for not negoitiating a fare before hand!!!!

I believe the buses on the hotel strip run 24 hrs.
    There are 4 bus routes:

    R-2 & R-15 go to Wal-Mart & Mercado 28 (Market 28 )

R-1 goes to Puerto Juarez, Wal-mart, Plaza 2000, Mercado23, & the Cancun bus station

R-27 travels on Tulum Ave & stops @ Plaza Las Americas where you catch the collectivo to go south on Hwy 307 to Playa Del Carmen-Tulum & all points in-between

Found this when I Googled Cancun bus routes. Hope it helps

When coming back from Walmart or Market 28 do you take the same bus back? (R2 or R15)
