No prob. and yes texts were at an international rate. We have sprint and we were explained to by them, that even though we opted for the prorated international plan for the duration of our stay in Cancun it only helped minimally. The deal is that most of the US carriers have not been able to negotiate deals with the tower providers/owners in Mexico making the rate for usage stay high. I believe that our outgoing texts were... ohh found the text from them explaining it... outgoing txts=$0.50, incoming txts=$0.15, calls $2.29/min, data$0.004/kb unless on international plan
I think if this is your first time out of the country from your kids, I would take a phone. As a mom of 2 (7 and 3), we've been traveling once a year w/o kids since the oldest was <1yr, I am usually an emotional mess (till we land in Cancun, that is, lol) and like the idea of being able to contact them if I, or they, need a quick fix. Also, we don't give the hotel number (too many questions from family members that I don't want to have to field) - so we usually tell them that if they need us, call or text the cell phone, and we check a couple times a day. Again, check with your provider, we booked through Apple Vacations this year and they told us about an app that we can load on my hubby's phone and we can call w/o changing to international plan by provider - not sure if it will work, but worth a shot. I would recommend, like another member said, to set a day(s) and time(s) to call, and keep it brief, to avoid a shocking phone bill when you return. Good luck and enjoy your trip!! -Alicia-
Hubby had a mexico plan and we call home every evening to check on our daughter. But the down side is she called during the Cruize. Ya, the last thing I wanted to do was chat with my 15 yr old while on it...LOL 'What ya doing mom' ahhhh, nothing just cruizing around on a boat....LOL
ohhhh no no no! the phone stays in the room at all times except when leaving the resort. otherwise you look to see hwta time it is and to check texts and whatever else! you're on vacation! for us it was just a means of security... like a lil kids blankie for the wife to know our kids were "within reach". check for texts or calls only when you are back at the room which should only be to "nap" or shower anyhow so and extra couple mins to answer a text or call then, your not gonna be missing much.
We have AT&T and 3 kids and did the following... Paid $30 for 120mb data. Used the data at airport and outside the resort for emails. Got wifi at resort for $80 for the week. Paid $30 for 80 mins. Called home once a day and talked for 10 mins each day. Paid $10 for 50 text messages. Ended up at 125 text messages. Sitters/gparents liked to text quick questions. Overage was .40 a text. $80 for all the conveniences of home and keeping in touch with the kids was well worth it to us!
I agree with what she said - I like to be able to call home when necessary, only we usually pay for internet and skype home. We like to have internet connection for other reasons too - so it's the most cost effective for us. Alicia - can you share the name of the app? ~Jill~
We always bring a phone, just in case we need to contact anyone. I'm on AT&T, and they'll let you add International phone plan for just a month, and pro-rate the bill out for the time you actually use it.
