Isla Holbox is like going back in time. We drove there 2 years ago from TTR and took a little fishing boat over to the island. No paved streets, laid back, Catholic church at the center of town (which is very small) has a courtyard where families gather in the evening, kids share 2 or 3 bikes (some without tires) while the parents exchange pleasantries. You can dine in little open air restaurants right where the owners live and cook. Dine with the families. Absolutely beautiful, We have traveled all over Quitana Roo and this place may be the most beautiful and pristine. There is even a pink flamingo reserve on the east end of the island. If you stay over be prepared to take a cold shower unless you wait till the afternoon when the sun warms the barrels on the roof. We even bought some cerveza at a local mini super and enjoyed ourselve on a beach palapa watching the moon and stars If you go once youi'll go again we sure will. Pam & Barry

If you go to Isla Holbox in july/august you can swim with Whalesharks (approx. 50 ft. long). They only eat plankton so don't worry. Very quiet at night so if you are going to party maybe not so much.

In the past we have stayed in Playa Del Carmen and rented a SUV for the week. We have driven to the ruins in Tulum which is very inexpensive. There is a monkey reserve that is called the Jungle place in Ackumal. It is run by a German woman who is off the beaten path but if you get in (have to make reservations) it is the best $50 per person experience. You feed the monkeys for about an hour and a half. She will take hundreds of photos for you on your camera. She suggests that you exchange email with others to exchange photos. She will shoot everyone with each others cameras. The turtles in Ackumal are fun to see swimming in the area, not sure if it is seasonal though. There are the zip lines in xplor,, about $100 per person for all day and it includes the food and drink buffet, I know in the States it would be a hell of a lot more than $100. Good times if your into the adventure stuff.
