Most of my students think the proposal is for two hours, which strikes me as overdoing what might otherwise be a good thing.

One hour would be worth the experiment, two hours suggests the problems Steve is concerned about.

Tampering with the time has never really caught my fancy: some fairly independent minded states, like Arizona, feel so strongly about it that they have opted out of daylight savings time in the U.S.

Why are people even uttering a 2 hour change? EST is a 1 hour change, that is it. Like so many others whether it be on here or on FB... when I was in school, I traveled in the dark to and from School all of Winter, many times walking and nothing happened. Just like noth ing happens when we do it at night.
But I still don't understand the theory of this time change, as it was pitch dark by 4:15..how does one think we will get more hours of sun when it's still dark at 7am and then dark at 4????

Tori: It will get light 1 hour later every morning, and it will get dark 1 hour later every evening. For example, if last winter there was daylight from 6 am to 5 pm, with the new changes there will be daylight in winter from 7 am to 6 pm.

As Steve pointed out above, it's not technically "more hours of daylight"... you get the same amount of hours of sunshine, just at different times of day. Many people (myself included) consider it an extra hour because we wake up well after the sun rises anyway, so it's like getting an extra hour tacked on in the afternoon.

Also, I walked by myself in an unlit neighborhood to the bus stop every morning from kindergarten through 8th grade, and never had any issues. I think kids walking to school will be fine so long as they look both ways :)
