Points taken Jim, but I would never advertise my discrimination about intelligence, in fact I think it's wrong for me to discriminate based on IQ...I just mentioned my bias because that is what I will do if I don't think about trying to be fair and non-discriminatory in my hiring. My point is that I don't think I'm right to discriminate, of course I should be picky and hire the best people, but the brightest may not always be the best for certain jobs. I think you made the point for me about Sunset...which is that they didn't think about how age discrimination might make them look or how it might turn off qualified candidates. The way they go about hiring people is a marketing and PR issue, just like the way they might market hotel rooms. My point is that they SHOULD think about it. My point is that to attract the best people the company might do better to think a bit more about the image it presents of itself in its job ads.
Personally, as soon as I see "Marketing 4 Sunset" I shiver and think about my pay that I still haven't seen or even heard of... This was in 2007 I also think about the fact that I was "this close" to getting deported thanks to them not doing my visa properly. They just gave me a "visitors" badge, which did NOT impress the INM in one of the 3 raids that happened for those 2 months that I worked for them  Oh, and I almost forgot about the reactions from other companies during my interviews when I happened to mention that I had worked for "Marketing 4 Sunset"... Not very popular and the interviews pretty much ended right at that point :? Maybe things have changed regarding these issues, but I have a feeling not much has been done... They were smart though - Since I wasn't registered to be working for them I couldnt make a case for the unpaid salary that they still owe me :-|
Erika, Seeing as you make the accusation, I do not normally go off on a rant like this, but, for the record, I have nothing to do with marketing or am I in the timeshare business at all, nor do I have anything against it. I have many friends that earn their living from it. I do however have a HUGE problem with the Sunset Group and the black eye that this company gives Cancun in the way that they treat tourists. Any one looking at these ads and considering working for this company needs to do a little research on Google first. Put in Sunset Royal Cancun, Sunset Lagoon Resort Hotel and Marina, Fisherman’s with words like, lied, scam, cheated, deceptive, etc and watch as the thousands of results come up. This job that is being advertised is to be involved in telemarketing and the company’s sole purpose is to get people to these Hotels, either “hooked” or “unhooked” so that they can have their vacation ruined on a 5 to 7 hour extremely high pressure timeshare sales presentation. Only to find out that what they have bought is nothing but a jar of snake oil. Again, I have nothing against timeshare, I know people that own in various Hotels up and down the strip and they love it. The thing is that different resorts have different standards of ethics when it comes to their sales practices and this company has the absolute bottom of the barrel lowest. Now to get back on topic I think that it is absolutely wrong to put specifications in print as to age, sex, etc when hiring for a job. Yes when we interview we may do it, but it should never be posted in print. To think that you could be turning away the most qualified candidate for the position because of their sex or because they are a year or two older than you had in mind is ridiculous. “Disappointing. Misleading, Strong arm sales tactics” http://cancun-hotels.tripadvisor.co...ancun_Yucatan_Peninsula.html#CHECK_RATES_CONT “Nice hotel, horrible time share presentation” http://cancun-hotels.tripadvisor.co...ancun_Yucatan_Peninsula.html#CHECK_RATES_CONT “Timeshare Presentation Ruined Sunset Royal Experience” http://cancun-hotels.tripadvisor.co...ancun_Yucatan_Peninsula.html#CHECK_RATES_CONT
When we first came to Cancun from the US (2 Years Ago), I was very eager to work in the tourism industry, being Mexican & bilingual, I thought I would find a job in no time. To my surprise, no body would hire me; for some jobs I was over qualified, while for others I was underquilfied (lack of experience). I didn't understand why, until I confronted one of the resort's managers. The problem was my age (I was 37 then), she claimed that people older than 33 are not teachable, and if offered a better job, they would not hesitate to leave. Well, yea, of course! Truth is I have found more discrimination here in Mexico, than in the 20 years I spent in the US (being a Mexican that is). So I don't know if it is legal (my guess it is) to profile people according to their age, if there is any law that protecs the worker, it is certainly not being enforced. Thank God I work from home now, and that my business going now. That is the way to go, I think, here or anywhere else.
