Remember 'downtown' actually refers to the city part of Cancun where the locals (and expats) go. If you ask a taxi to take you 'downtown' that is where you'll end up, and there's likely to be a very different reaction to your wife's attire! I'm sure you mean the clubs in the hotel zone though, in which case she'll be fine.
