A man from our town died while diving in Hawaii, nothing to do with the dive op, I believe he had a heart attack. Anyway, it was in our local paper but not in the paper in Hawaii.
Unless lightning struck twice in Cancun in June, the young lady was from Texas and suffered from a seizure condition. She probably should not have been diving but better to die doing something you love than have a seizure and die in a fiery car wreck. As a side note, it was not reported in her hometown paper, I just knew some of the folks with her on the dive trip.
Dive accidents are usually reported here. http://www.cdnn.info/news/safety/safety.html I was just curious to why this one wasn't.
My heart goes out to the family. It's an awful story and I hope that the truth comes out as to how she died - rather than gossip and suspicion. Nothing like that should ever happen. So sad, what a grave sin. Rivergirl, as a Canadian, I have to say, our media has been way over-the-top on any and every citizen killed in Mexico for the past 3 or 4 years. It's painting this picture in our national mindset that we should avoid Mexico like the plague. When I tell people I have a place in Puerto Morelos, Mexico they look at me now with either envy - or suspicion as if I have a death-wish. I'd be safer in Brooklyn in their eyes. I know otherwise!
I want to comment that the avoid-Mexico syndrome is rather common in the US as well. I know otherwise, having spent 5 solid months in Mexico. The majority in Cancun. It took almost a month to get to Cancun, as we were delayed 3 weeks in Villahermosa. Walking anywhere at any hours even by myself was OK, just like home. I have been with my now-husband pretty much the whole 5+ years it's been since I returned from Mexico. I have been working hard at him to give Mexico a chance. Finally we went as a cruise stop in Cozumel, and he is a lot more open now. I think it's deep in his family actually, the stay-home mentality. I wish people kept an open mind and use common sense to think these 'horror-stories of trips to Mexico' you hear about or accidents of any kind can and do happen in any country. That said, I would hate for anything to happen to anyone I know and love no matter where they are. I could not imagine; my heart goes out as well.
