I have to disagree Epic. I find market 23 very interesting for a tourist and I myself avoid market 28 because of the annoying shop keepers. Here are some pics of market 23 Be sure to have a cervesa frio at Papa Gayos
jim, You are getting great pointers here. I will add a couple. From Gonzo's directions to Market 23, there are two side streets from Tulum to M23. Both are named Cedro, one running each way. Either will get you there. M28 is cool. You can actually see meat and chicken hanging on hooks. It is the best place to buy cheese and if you are there in the morning, the best time to go, you will always see a line. There is a food court of sorts in the middle. It is totally safe but you will be at a big disadvantage if you don't have at least some basic spanish skills. You can get liters of fresh OJ for about $1.25 US. Yummy. If you don't ask for the bottle you may get it in a plastic bag, tied with a knot and a straw in it. This is also a great place to get Talavera, the brightly painted Mexican dinner and cookwear. Spend $400 Mxn and you can ask for and get 10% off. Hold firm. If you like what we call "Chicharon" like pork rinds or pork skins, around the corner from the cheese place, you can, if you want, get a huge piece, even with pork meat about the size of a pork chop. Or just get the fried fat. $50 Mxn per kg, so like $2 a pound; sold by weight. To Tori's for Market 28, I am pretty sure the R-2 Walmart stop is nearly a block after Tankah, just before Palenque. When you go north on Tankah, the road sort of curves to the right. As you walk the curve, you wll see a big "28" and you cross there. Pay close attention to the landmarks where you enter. This is a 4 sided market, and each outside looks exactly like the others. You don't want to find yourself lost when leaving. Going back to the HZ, the bus stop from M28 is actually next to Walmart, and as Tori says, just one blokc over. From where you get OFF the bus just look up in the air across the street and you will see big red letters on top of a taller building reading SUPER DAMAS FITNESS. Just get to the other side of that building and the bus stop is obvious. That center also has a Starbucks and a liquor store with some gourmet sorts of things. To me it is the best place to buy booze. As cheap or cheaper than Walmart, except maybe for beer and a great place to pick up stuff for your vacation and for your trip home. Both the R-1 and R-2 buses go downtown. As you approach downtown, the km markers count downward to zero. The R-1 makes a right at the 2nd light after km 0. The R-2 keeps going and you want off at the 5th light after km 0. The 3rd is a pedestrian crossing in front of a hospital. Enjoy.
Thanks guys , I appreciate the detailed directions and the pics . We are looking forward to this trip ALOT!!!!!
