I would think that scented candles are probably the worst idea one could do, especially when one has been drinking all day, knowing me I would probably have my buddy Mr Murphies Law follow me there and burn the place down, would hate to see what kind of damage that would do and the cost of it.

Plug In Air Fresheners are good, hotel is 3 prong 115V Electrical so it works
    Frebreeze
    Air Freshener in can
Running the sink & shower for 10 minutes on HOT will clear out the drains
Open the balcony door and front entrance door for 5 minutes

Candles - Not a good idea

    air quality

We had someone tell us that if you spray the air vents with disinfectant, it will help. My problem wasn't so much the smell but something in the air affected my lungs and I had a horrible smokers cough for most of the trip. They said it was due to the humidity and the filters on the air vents being moist and full of mold spores. I have touchy lungs to start with but I have never experienced that before. So we will try that trick for next year and bring some good drugs in case it doesn't work. Apparently my raspy voice was rather sexy at times lol. Who'd a thunk lol

My first floor room had a musty smell but I was rarely in it, so it didn't bother me much. When I got home and opened up my suitcase all my clothes from the trip had the same smell.

Someone told us the same thing, we used lysol and sprayed the vents and we were fine in Oct.. But like you we got some kind of lung infection. We feel its from the airconditioner, we're not use to it. So we shut if off while we were in the room, Like I said all good in Oct.
that cough was a bugger got it middle of April and lasted till the end of Aug.

Deb didnt you get sick after you got home in October as well? I usually get sick after i get home but usuallly when I am there for 2 weeks.. 10 days in October i was fine.. but.. what i do now is.. I buy lysol wet ones and spray hand sanitizer and I wash down the plane seat.. my seat.. the tray, the arm, the back of the seat in front of me .. the seat belt especially the seat belt.. every thing i can wipe I wipe down... and then i spray the seat and head rest... I especially do this on the way home.. and I also do not have the airplane air blowing on me.. I dont care how hot it is.. and so I have had 2 trips where i didnt get sick there or after i got home.. I believe that the smelly rooms are just the humidity and if you keep the air conditioning up on high it drys the room out or you get used to the smell.. ;)
