Kathy: Nurse sharks are usually VERY docile, and they certainly dont "attack" humans on purpose. Most bites comes in pure self-defense, and it usually take a LOT to piss them off. If they have young ones, well, just like any animals(including humans), they will do whatever they can to protect their offspring. From what I know(friends who work with sharks on a daily basis for +30 years), there are something like 50 recorded Nurse shark attacks since 1580... I think 1 was fatal... Id be more worried about crap that tourists and locals leave in the water, haha
Katty, tranquila. In the last 100 years there have been 6 reported shark attacks in QRoo. This particular nurse shark was close to shore to have her babies and was obviously in distress with so many people and jet skis around. I know it's nerve wracking, but the odds really are against an attack. I'd be more worried about jellies.
I remember when I was a little girl in Isla Mujeres seeing a man dragged out of a nurse shark petting area with a bite to his leg and a his hip dislocated. He was messing with one of the shark's babies. I guess the lesson is, don't mess with mamma nurse sharks.
