I am talking about USD. For what you are saying $400 ~ $500 $200 in ones the rest in Fives, Tens and 20's When you exchange for pesos look at the rate. The hotel is usually one of the best rates. If you can get 12.5 pesos to one USD you are doing well. When you buy things on stores with dollars they will not give you that same rate. I have seen business just dumb it down to 10:1. For small shopping, get $200 in Pesos and its easier. And Negotiate everything at the small stores. For the most part anything that does not have a price tag is negotiable. I have literally seen one store sell some random item for $10 then the next place sells the same thing for $1 "Esta Muy Caro, Gracias" = "This is very expensive, thank you" will almost always garner the response "ok, how much you want to pay"
You are allowed to use up to $1500 USD cash per person in any one month period. But as UK tourists you will lose BIG TIME on the conversion rate if you use USD rather than converting directly from £ to Pesos - you can confirm this with Steve(owner admin of CancunCare - he's a Brit expat )
If you are from the United States, you don't need to convert your dollars into pesos. If you are from anywhere else in the world, you should convert your money into pesos, not dollars.
they wouldnt let us pay to get out of mexico in $ we had to pay in £ or pesos .but we could use $ there no problem
Just got back.. feb 12th - 19th 2012 We used $1 bills to tip and pesos on the economy. All was good.:beer4:
It must be just a UK thing. We just got back and only used US$ but we don't have to pay anything to leave at the airport either so not sure about that? We are from Canada and have always only used US$. We are curious about this as well cause we are going back in April.
We usually allow $100us in ones just for tips. The last trip we took $300us and we didn't shop or do any excursions but it got eaten up at the airport coming back on food which is $$$ and dutyfree. The good clubs are gonna run you $45-50 pp all inclusive if they haven't gone up from+ last year? And the good excursions can cost you $70-100+pp all inclusive. I really don't think $500 is gonna cut it. However we usually book our excursions with our travel rep at the hotel with visa or mc cause we know it's safe.:flagcanada::wave:
No, it's not correct. UK companies have been saying this for over a year now and it is all about their convenience and profit - there is no such law. Dollars are still perfectly acceptable almost everywhere in Cancun. Truth of the matter is there are restrictions on exchanging and banking US$, but not on accepting them or how much of them you spend. The UK companies don't want you bringing Dollars as they wont accept them because they cant bank them and they lose out on not being able to sell you their overpriced tours if Dollars is all you bring. By the way, do not book any tours with a UK travel company they will put you on the same bus as people who bought the tour at half the price online! Please could you forward a copy of the email to me steve@cancuncare.com, It's about time someone said something about this. Same as above, they wont let you pay in Dollars because they cant do anything with them if you do. But you will be able to use them almost everywhere that tourists frequent. In 99% of cases it is only Brits who physically have to pay a departure tax when leaving. For those flying from the US or Canada the tax is almost always included in your ticket, also Brits flying BA or Virgin on scheduled flights will have it included in their ticket too. Not strictly true Wayne, the restriction is on how much you can exchange or deposit in a bank account - not how much you spend. I dare say the law is shabby on monitoring how much is exchanged so I doubt even that would ever be a problem. There are still ATM's here that dispense USD and also if you bring them in yourself or are paid in USD as some hotel workers are you can spend as many as you've got. Just ask my wife I would agree with you though that there is no reason for Brits to bring USD to Mexico that has the Peso as its currency. I can understand people from the US bringing them for familiarity reasons, but as mentioned above it's likely to lead to not getting the best bang for your buck due to exchange rates always being against you. Dollars aree OK for things priced in Dollars such as nightclub entrance fees or tours, but using Pesos is almost always going to lead to saving money. Also, remember that if you tip in USD then the hotel workers have to find some way of exchanging them. They cant pay their mortgage or rent, electricity or phone bill in Dollars and although the supermarkets close to tourist areas do accept Dollars the people you are tipping are unlikely to shop there as they will live much further away.
Hi Steve Just to confirm are you saying across the board its better to tip in Peso's at Temptations? what should we tip with on your cruise ?
