Is this new? When we were in Cancun in Feb-Mar we werent asked our name at the cambios. But at the bank you had to sign something, but werent asked for an id or anything. So you could have written anyones name. (my personal favorite "Jimi Hendrix")
They just ask for a name. You do not need to show i.d. and you need to sign the receipt. I usually do not give my real name (they usually do not understand it anyway). I have used Al Apenyo, Al Zymer, Bud Wiser, Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker. There are so many to choose from. I think the kiosk in La Isla is something like CL Banco.
Forget the idea of the hotels. Their exchange rate is worse then the airport. They will take advantage of you vs. banks or supermarkets. The banks will exchange minimal amount for tourists (I think up to $300 per day max $1500 per month) so all this info about that is not exactly correct. As for Wal Mart, Costco, Soriana, etc. the suggestion of a $50 bill is correct. I always take the $50 bill buy a pack of gum for 50 cents and take my change in pesos and am all set for a while. Their rate is the best out there compared to everyone other then banks. Note though that you should count the change and look at the receipt to make sure the cashier gives you the proper amount. I have seen some cashiers try to keep a few pesos by error or on purpuse. Finally ATM machines are also your good bet. Yes your bank may charge a fee but still you get the best possible rate overall.
