We ARE printing money up here, with similar programs to support businesses and individuals. But I do not understand the experts to be saying that EVERYONE needs to be tested. My province is doing quite well, with only about 20-40 new reported cases per day and 1700 total cases, and the new cases are mostly in nursing homes and a prison rather than random citizens. I saw on the news yesterday that the premier of my province (equivalent to a US governor) is in discussions with Insley of WA state about opening up the Can/US border between us earlier than other places in Canada. Unlike the US, I don't hear any buzz about Canadians protesting against the stay at home orders. Maybe that's because Canadians as a whole are pretty mild-mannered, and do what we're told Or maybe we are just happy to stay home for as long as the beer holds out.
Agreed! A buddy of mine was telling me earlier this week, "You know who I think ought to be scared? Commercial office space landlords and property owners. To some extent, companies are being forced to look at the once-required office space as merely an optional item on a balance sheet." I thought about that, and it seems accurate to me. Another friend of mine is General Counsel for a mid-sized medical supply and coordination company in Illinois. Well, his offices are in St. Louis, in west county and he's got a 1 to 1.5 hour commute each way. Their office space for his part of the shop occupies the entire first floor of a large office building... and no one is there, and nobody's been there since stay-at-home commenced. All of the company's business has continued, without interruption, since everyone was told go home and work from there. Do you think That lease is going to be renewed? Getting rid of it off of the balance sheet is a straight conversion from expense to net corporate profit, to be passed straight on to the investors as dividends or increased fluidity, whatever. Granted, some sort of evaluation on processes and production (What? Merit-based reviews?) on the staff working from home will be following... but lots of industries already do it (Karen's work from home law firm is an example, I betcha.... if her work sucked, she'd no longer be doing it, I also betcha.)
There you go getting erroneous information from those sources again. When will you ever learn... Ha! That fell into place nicely.
So I’ve been drinking... Aren’t a lot of you applying for the small business loans? Isn’t that a “liberal socialist” program? When it works for you you like it.
@Stacia_and_John There is software you can install on computers to monitor what your employees are doing, e.g., make sure they are not on Facebook instead of Excel.
One thing that bothers me in all this we are from Upstate New York (Oswego County) We have very few cases, and in Syracuse NY (Onondaga County) where are biggest hospital is they are starting to layoff hospital workers because they are not needed. But Cuomo is treating us as a whole. Upstate is going to suffer because of New York City. Yes I agree it is tragic in NYC but we should be looked at as regions not the state as a whole.
Since we are sharing what bothers each of us ... full disclosure I am conservative fiscally but socially liberal. This year I switched from a life long republican to a Democrat. What bothers me is people like to say the economy is a mess due to these actions but the stock market is doing quite well since March 23rd (the low point) and the stimulus packages. Why would the market be doing so well yet so many individuals and small businesses be struggling? Is it possible that the stimulus program is focused on the wrong thing? YES! Not enough for the people and the small businesses and to much for the corporations? YES! Should the first priority be bailing out airlines? NO! I get very annoyed when people say social distancing is an over reaction and people acting out of fear. The fact is the virus spreads by close contact. The less people are near each other the less the virus spreads. If I believed we were smart enough to voluntarily social distance then I would agree that the govt has gone too far. However we are not smart enough. Case in point...many of you voted for our president and will again no matter what he does. You can blame the media, blame the liberals, etc if it makes you feel better. So be it. I have always been a live and let live type of person, as long as it doesn’t adversely effect others and appreciate and respect others opinions but man this has challenged all of those beliefs. It is a troubling time for sure. I look forward to a time where we have leadership that exudes cooperation, treats all as equals and provides benefits that support all people. I know that will not happen under current leadership.
So you like to throw gasoline on the fire when you drive by, and not water. Got it. Not really seeing how this is a liberal socialist program, and it's a little different comparing money to an actual business, and a welfare to, dare I say, Illegal aliens... but if the hypocrisy game is what you want to play then, I'm all for it. I'll use a favorite of line used by libs when it comes to abortion, and simply apply it to this money. "My money, my choice"
I don't know. Maybe your right? I'm not a big stock market expert, but it is possible the market has responded, because they see light at the end of the tunnel, and have resisted a big selloff, that would have been a precursor to a worse recession, and if things got way worse, depression...? We wouldn't have much of an economy if the airlines went under, and honestly, I thought this bailout money to them was targeted differently than the last one. They certainly wouldn't have expected the government to basically end their business for an extended amount of time, and wouldn't have even had this in their emergency folder. I am WAY more cynical than that with politics. Most very left libs I listen to on talk radio, the Stephanie Miller, Tom Hartman types think Obama was a cooperate sellout, and no different than republicans, so theirs that. I also don't think that democrats, or Biden treat everyone as equals. Just maybe a different group get that treatment over, the other administrations group. Is it "fair" when say a fireman/policeman, pick your affirmative action government job of your liking, finishes near the top in his class, but gets passed over, because of a minority number that needs to be reached first? And don't tell that it doesn't happen. Hell, Biden has already said his VP is going to be a woman. I would think, but call me crazy, that he would have said, i'm going to have the most qualified as VP, not the one that gets him the most votes. My wife's boss has a saying, life isn't fair, you just try to be on the right side of it. Cruel, I suppose, but utopia doesn't exist, nor would it work, in my opinion. Bottom line about this up coming election. China, f'ed everyone over pretty damn bad, and they need to be dealt with. However, if you live in fly over country like me with farming communities all around, you also realize that we NEED China very very much, to buy our commodities. I trust Trump WAY (sorry for the caps) than Biden, or any other democrat, at getting us a trade deal with them. This is a rabbit trail well off the path of Covid, but my thoughts anyway.
