Last year at Bulldogs they had a cock fight. It was only for a few moments, but it was a cock fight. We left because of it. I don't agree with forceing animals to fight for there life.
I'm afraid it's legal. From Wiki: "In Aguascalientes, a state capital, one of the city's principal concert halls is the cockfighting arena, the palenque. During the San Marcos Fair, well-known throughout Mexico, cockfights alternate with important concerts, where the singers or dancers perform from the cockpit. Many popular singers have performed there, e.g. Latin Grammy winners Alejandro Fernandez and Alejandra Guzman." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockfight#Latin_America And an eyewitness account of that very same San Marcos Fair recounting the fights, "Visitors can also place their bets on fighting cocks in the Casino which houses Latin America's biggest palenque, or cock fighting arena." http://www.2camels.com/san-marcos-national-fair.php So the next time you're on Avenida Palenque...
Sorry if I gave some incorrect information about cockfighting being illegal. I know people who raise them and even have some on my ranch but have NEVER seen the fighting advertised and promoted openly--the shows yes, but the actual fights to the death are always surrounded by secrecy. The following fairly recent articles mention events in Q.Roo and as close to home as Bonfil in Cancun. They mention that there are also "clandestine" events. Perhaps it is the betting that is illegal and not the cockfighting but being legal or illegal doesn't usually stop things. http://www.novenet.com.mx/seccion.php?id=111136&sec=3&d=27&m=06&y=2008 http://www.elsiglodetorreon.com.mx/noticia/336361.peleas-de-gallos-diversion-familiar-en-quinta.html http://www.yucatan.com.mx/noticia.asp?cx=11$1310000000$3892152&f=20080820
Where are you getting the whole secrecy "clandestine" thing from??? If you go to state fairs around the country before the famous singers like luis miguel etc. come on they always have a cockfight to the death. I've been to big "fiestas" with cock fights - there was never any secrecy about the betting or the fights? Cock fighting is very common in Mexico - just not in this area.
Please disregard my comments, anyone who is offended by the idea of cockfighting. I am not speaking to you, will not argue morality. I have attended several events in Barra de Navidad and Puerto Escondido. I have had opportunity in other parts of Mexico. Tourists may not often have occasion to visit a farm/feed store. Step in and browse the next feed store you pass. (You are not likely to find one on the main streets of Cancun perhaps) You may well find displayed a selection of small blades that are used to attach to the spur area of the cock. Gambling is always a part of the event. Sometimes a roulette wheel is used between matches. I have enjoyed the experience and found extra opportunity to interact with Mexican people. These are people I would not expect to meet around the aqua bar, if I ever found myself in that environment. For people like me, it is a worthwhile experience. Speaking a little Spanish enhances it. I have never felt in danger. Use the word "palenque", just like the ruins in Chiapas, to ask locals where you can find one.
It could be used by anyone seeking such information. I conducted a search including "cockfight" as part of the criteria and came up with the post. Starting to research the area because when last I passed through, 1976, I camped for weeks at Tulum, no development for miles, and I bet it has changed. In advance and in anticipation of reciprocal help, I offer my experience.
I'm thinking he fell off his chair...after checking his thread three times a day for 6 years...at last he got the information he was looking for. "Finally!" he exclaimed. "Honey, call the travel agent. We're going to Mexico!"
Been to Cancun 28 times and till haven't found it yet  Any updates? Maybe on the way to Chichen Itza?
