By no means the end all on this but from my understanding from reading various stories in the local press, a group of Chinese vacationers, apparently two couples, at least two, naturalized Mexican citizens from Baja, were in the area of Party Centro in the Hotel District at around 2:30 AM. on Thursday. The area was near what is euphemistically called the "alley of miracles" AKA a known drug purchasing location. The polite story seems to be that the visitors brushed up against two locals, an argument and shoving match ensued and one of the locals pulled a knife, killing one of the male Chinese tourists and wounding another, before fleeing on foot towards the lagoon where they grabbed a taxi, leaving the murder weapon, a pocket knife in their wake near McDonalds. The impolite side of this reads from the other perspective, that it had been the second time the Chinese vacationers had been to the Alley, they had an argument with suspected drug dealers, followed by the fight, killing. The local police are believed to know whom the alleged killers are after investigating and are searching for the suspects at this time. Notably in the press, the security cameras near the scene were either pointed out of sight or there was operator failure, mechanical failure, and/ or all three scenarios. From this perspective, it appears to be an isolated issue, and unrelated to the problems occurring predominantly in the downtown, something that wouldn't concern me if I was in Cancun or getting ready to visit.
