Chichen Itza is Nice i took my cousin the other time i went and we mostly went bc she wanted to check it off her bucket list its was THE longest ride back and forth with 2 stop to a restaurant and one to a Cenote which was like a under ground natural pool of sorts i personally would not do it again once we got here we had to wait until the designated return time it was like 99 degrees in June with no shade to be found and by the time we got back to the hotel after stopping in EVERY hotel in the zone it was like 10 pm and we where pooped! but it did give so nice pictures though..

It's going to be super hot if you're going anytime soon. I would consider going to Tulum so you at least get an ocean breeze.

Oh forgot to add that was the year the hurricane came through and we got extended a couple of days so we didn't miss much time by the pool.... and the hurricane decided it really didn't want to ruin the party either it downgraded itself to a tropical storm as scary as that was it taught us one thing...the staff will keep the party going no matter what...they had all the windows boarded up moved the pool chairs away took down the umbrellas but they kept the party going think more hurricanes were served up by the bar staff that night as we were having a hurricane party so lets do it right....but by the next morning the staff had everything back where it should be and you'd never have known that a tropical storm had hit the place....the only place where things were still a little out of sorts was at the beach there was extra seaweed on shore but the guy that cleans the beach was doing his best to get that under control

Being new to TTR as well, we had the same question about tours and other excursions from the resort. After reading everyone's replies, we may decide to play it by ear too!
