When you start planning your vacation to Cancun or Riviera Maya, you will see many websites talking about Chichen Itza. You may or may not have heard of this place and most people don't know how to pronounce it. So you want to know more about this Chicken Pizza place? You've come to the right place. Check out CancunCare's article all about this ancient Mayan city. So now you've decided you want to see what all the fuss is about? There are a few ways to get to Chichen Itza. You can take a public bus tour from Cancun, or you can hire a private driver to take you. While the public tour is a great value, it does have some drawbacks. You are on a set schedule and locked into the guide itinerary. After your are picked up you have to go to a check in location and you don't leave Cancun until about an hour later. It costs a little more, but many folks really enjoy the comfort, flexibility and convenience of our Chichen Itza Private tours. You decide the pickup time at your hotel lobby. This is a big plus if you are staying all inclusive so you can have breakfast before you leave the hotel. I strongly recommend this. When your private driver picks you up, you head straight to Chichen Itza. This allows you to see the magical Mayan pyramids earlier in the day, before the heat of the afternoon and before the crowds of tour buses arrive. You also have the flexibility to spend as much or little time in Chichen Itza as you wish. Included in your private tour price is the vehicle and driver, entrance fee into Chichen Itza, tolls & parking. It does not include a guided tour of the ruins. This is because some people prefer to tour the ruins on their own, while others can hire a guide at the entrance. Today guides cost 800 pesos for a 90 minute tour of Chichen Itza. After you finish touring the Mayan city, your driver can take you to the Colonial town of Valladolid where you can buy lunch or souvenirs. I personally like the souvenir shops here better than inside Chichen Itza. If you want to expand your day trip, you can optionally add on a trip to Ik Kil cenote to swim in the fresh water and have a buffet lunch. This is our most popular option. For folks staying in Cancun, a second add on is available that takes you another site of ruins called Ek Balam. People staying in the Riviera Maya can add on Coba instead. (Because of the locations of these two sites, it is less driving time for Cancun people to see Ek Balam and Riviera Maya people to see Coba). Private tour options are especially handy if you have kids, elderly travelers or if you do not like crowds. The flexibility the private tours offer is well worth the extra cost.
