    hello
does anybody have any suggestions to any causal dining in cancun? we are a family of 6 who are not into fancy expensive restaurant nor are we a drinker. we are staying at the westin and at the hilton and was wondering if it would be cheaper to eat at the hotel or would it be cheaper to go the the chain restaurant or to purchase the entrainment coupons? would there be any problems with the restaurant accepting these coupons? would they also be used in places in isla mujeres ? any places to go for lunch at the island of isla mujeres?
    thanks

Cheaper to stay away from hotels and chains. In the hotel zone try Fish Fritanga, Mocambo or Casa de las Margaritas. Isla Mujeres lunch time must be Playa Lancheros for their famous Tikinxic fish. Downtown there are lots of inexpensive restaurants, head to Yaxchilan Avenue, many down there. Downtown there are also Mexican chain restaurants (but different than the US ones) Toks, Vips, Sanborns and El Porton.

Go downtown for sure for cheaper meals. We go on the budget plan too (gotta save cash for the Tequila and Cervesas) and there are HUNDREDS of inexpensive restaurants downtown. The triangle of Uxmal and Yaxchilan there is a small restuarant called La Patapio (not sure on the spelling we just call it the "Patio") that has excellent meals for a great price. It was just down from the bus station on Uxmal. I had breakfast there 8 of the 11 days we were there. Was too hungover the other days.

I think you could be downtown for about 8 months and never eat at the same place twice. CancunCanuk hit it on the head with the Yaxchilan Ave. restuarants.

Oh how I miss the fresh fruit and veggies....... damned Minnesota weather.

    Let's see,
Agreeing with Gonzo, go downtown, you will find "El tacalote" on Ave Coba, La Taberna on Yaxchilan, or the guy on the street selling tacos

We always stop at Jax on Isla......food is good and buckets of corona's for just 60 peso's or something like that. Right on the corner by the beach.

    Isla Mujeres

There's really no place on Isla Mujeres that would accept Cancun coupons, but the restaurants here are very reasonably priced. Jax is an excellent suggestion for lunch. Dine upstairs for a beautiful view and a nice breeze. Jax has a large menu with great cheeseburgers and nachos, cheese sticks, fries, ceviche, etc.

If you are in the mood for fresh Mexican style seafood try one of the coctelerias on the waterfront on the same side of the street as the ferry. Picus and Mininos are very good and inexpensive. A new waterfront restaurant that has daily entertainment is Brisas Grill. Ballyhoo, located on the docks behind the Pemex station has great fish and chips for $5.50 and my favorite fish tacos for $4.50. If you are in the mood for Italian, Casa Rolandi's is on Hidalgo for good pizza and pasta.

Hope you have a wonderful vacation.

Try lunch at the Sunset Grill right on the beach. Excellent shrimp tacos and very large drinks....J
