If your walking around downtown Cancun and decide to take a short cut through side streets at night... Watch out for wild dogs and keep an extra gordito on you.
Understood... like any city, know where you are and where you are going, don't go alone, and enjoy the experience. You'll find great authentic Mexican food downtown, cheap drinks and some cool places to shop for goods.
No need to worry pal like trigg said you rarely make it back with your friend to your hotel anyway theres always LOADSA ppl around and I certainly feel safer in cancun than in London! No one wants to F**k with the mexican police to be fair
Downtown near the bus stop is pack with people, even at night. I took the wrong bus and ended up 5 min cab ride away and it was a little scary.
One of the reasons we moved to Cancun from the UK was because it is far safer and a much nicer atmosphere to bring our daughter up in. No chavs here, I dont think I've seen a single fight in 3 years and random acts of violence just dont happen. Just use common sense, dont venture too far once in downtown (not because it's dangerous but because you could get easily lost) and you'll be fine. Make sure you head to Ave Yaxchillan and party the locals way.
Cancun is MUCH safer than Chicago!!! That being said, crime happens EVERYWHERE, even in paradise. So, don't leave your common sense in your hotel room, take it with you no matter where you go. Michelle
