Whenever i mention to someone i am going to Mexico, i always get the "Oooo be careful!"

I have travelled enough in my short life to know to watch out for pickpockets, always have my wits about me and be aware at all times.

Is it safe to go for a stroll around downtown cancun? Or is it somewhere where tourists are not meant to go?

Cancun is likely one of the most tourist spots IN mexico! Cancun is likely safer to be than in your own home town!! Anyone who knows anything about cancun knows its not a haven for much crime. While crime exists, its likely to happen far off the beaten path where you will not be.

its quite possible its because of all the killings of canadians in recent past that thats why they are saying that as well...cause i know we get it alot here.

just keep your nose out of peoples business, keep your wits about you as you said and watch for the buses  and you should be fine

it is just like any other major city i would say.

if you hang out in big crows you will be ok.

if you go walking around by yourself in the alleys, you might get robbed or whatever.

The clubs are all close to one another, and it is very very safe.

Yea deffinatly nothing to worry about rarely see any fights even in clubs. and the locals are friendly in Cancun there is no crime as its one of mexicos big income spots so any crime would be quickly stamped out!

But at nights me and Riki always ended up split up and walking around on own theres 1000s of friendly people on street and you can strike up a conversation with anyone . Everyone is there for same reason.

Remember, 'downtown Cancun' is not Party Central, where the clubs are....

the clubs are in the Hotel Zone, near the bend in the '7'

Downtown is where most of the locals and hotel workers live.
