There is a guy named Silvestre who is good with electrical but does other work too. Off Palenque between Chichen Itza and Lopez Portillo. Anyone who works on cars can do a hose replacement. He speaks get by English.

There is another place called Mobil on Huayacan. Owner, Jacobo does basic mechanical things.

Front ends, suspension type things, Gordo, on Lopez near Uxmal, works in a clutch and brake shop but moonlights at his home on NiƱos Heroes.

To get low costs you almost need a specialist per area of work.

Want a sun roof repaired? Av. Chichen Itza just before Kabah is going west.

One thing for sure. Don't go to any dealers. At Ford, you can coast in with a smoking engine and you may get an appt for tomorrow. Then the next day, after 3 pm you will maybe get a diagnosis and an estimate that will take your breath away. And then it's anyone's guess how long it will take to get the parts you need. I wanted another key for an 07 Escape I recently bought. They wanted $704 for the key and $550 to cut/program it. A key dude at Mkt 23 sent me to his friend (on La Luna) and it was done in 30 minutes for $800. Divide by about $12.50 to get it in dollars. But Ford was right at $100 US for a stupid key.

Matkirk was after a key for his Merc recently and had to import one from England. Maybe TJ's key dude could have fixed him up?

As for dealers we had to take ours into Audi last week when the engine warning light came on and the revs were acting weird. They fixed it same day and car came back fine, but I have no idea what they did.

Apparently they replaced a/the 'bobinas'. I have no idea what 'bobinas' are and Jannet doesnt know what they are in Spanish either, let alone in English.

It cost $6,000 Pesos so I bloody well hope it wasnt a spark plug.

Don't mind a non-local perusing (killing time) but I looked up bobinas using google translate, it comes out be 'coils'. So part of the ignition system (getting electricity to the sparkplug essentially) from my limited knowledge.

On almost any modern car or truck any actual work involves quite a bit of labour to get at anything you have to wrench on. You probably paid $5,000 labour on a $1,000 part.

Guess high repair costs don't change wherever you may live!:aktion061:

    Cheers Keith, appreciate the insight.

With this kind of thing you're between a rock and a hardplace. It had to be fixed but I'd rather take it to the dealership than ask 'Jose's car repairs' down the road to look at it. There's all kinds of electronic gizmos which Jose might mess up and maybe replace with inferior parts and create more problems in the long run.

But I am relieved it wasnt a spark plug which costs $11 USD on Amazon, and they did wash it too :)
