    Hi All,

I will be in Cancun for a few weeks and would really like the opportunity to visit the prison, cheer up any English speaking prisoners, provide some confort ítems etc.

If anyone knows how I can arrange that, any help would be great.

    Thanks,
    Nik

    Access, Cancun jail

Access is easy if you have the name of a prisoner you plan to visit. I visited a number of times a few years ago. I don't any longer remember what the visiting days may be, but a trip to the jail would probably bare fruit, as this sort of information will either be posted or you'll be able to ask someone there.

On visiting days you get in a line of those wishing to enter, announce who you are planning to visit, go through a search process, and surrender everything from your pockets (don't take anything you wouldn't want to risk losing).

An official photo ID will be required. Once cleared, a prison trustee will help you locate the person you are seeking.

When I visited I was escorted to a large open area where family and other visits occur: family groups were having picnics, and other prisoners were seated at plastic tables in the open air playing board games, or just talking, as small children ran around them.

If there are groups that visit for the general population, with humanitarian assistance in mind, I don't know who they may be or how to contact them.

I found a group that works in the jail: you may need a Spanish speaker to accompany you.
