agreed, Im thinking I need to edit the thread, we dont need that on here. Nothing you purposely did Mugway!
I understand the need to let people know what does happen here, if you are not careful, but I am pretty offended by this whole subject matter. My boyfriend is Mexican, and I have been staying downtown, alone, since the 12th and have had zero problems. I am out late by myself, I am in Coletivo vans with nothing but the locals, and never once have I felt unsafe, threatened or even uncomfortable. Fear is what you out out there. If someone sees you as an easy target, guess what, no matter where you are in the world, something could happen. I don't like how the locals are being portrayed as Corrupt....that hurts me. Sorry, I have been reading the new posts daily and needed to say my side.
when the proof is in the pudding, there's no way to deny that some are the dishonest type, but its unfair to say they ALL are like that....that goes on EVERYWHERE though, not just Cancun
I didnt mean to offend with the subject, just wanted to discuss what i had experienced is all. Lots of mexicans are nice of course, just this time i had problems whereas previous times i didnt
Also this post reminds me of the news always negative.. never all the positive stuff that happens, crime is everywhere in the world
Yeah, I met plenty of awesome Mexicans on this trip. Norma's new roommate. All the taxi drivers downtown. Ruben, the Oasis bellman. etc etc. But also some sketchy ones that really pissed me off. Like the security guards who tried to extort money from us. Roger, the tour package selling guy at Oasis who came to Joe's room to threaten us. The people who pickpocketed Andrew. etc. etc We should treat everyone as individuals and judge them as such instead of lumping everyone who look alike into one group. Like in any city or country, there are good people and bad people. We should use our experiences to make others aware of the danger and help them avoid getting into the same bad situations without being making racist comment.
yeah well crime happens everywhere and happens more when u let ur guard down. I learnt the hard way,I come from Mexico city ,so me being a big city girl i thought yeah well cancun is just a playground...while cancun is pretty safe...just watch out for the people in the party area or buses looking for prey ,try to spot them when ur sober and you will see what i am talkin about, i really dont think you have to be racist but be very careful ,I once had a couple try and "help me get home" cuz i lost my friends in a club and decided to wander around b y myself...we got a taxi, that i paid for to my hotel ...i had two cellphones on me,a nice one and one that wasnt worth more than 60 dollars ,i got on the cab with both phones ,i was trying to phone friends...and suddenly the guy gets off and ssays he got stuff to do...leaves me with the girl, yeah well guy took off with my nice phone and made the girl stay with me to make sure i wasnt doing anything... oh and dont get on cabs by yourself ,and if u do dont get on the front seat ,makes it easy to get mugged. City buses are safer ,just make sure ur aware of whats going on. You dont have to be american or english or anything ,all it takes is one person with their guard off, people lookin for prey and some nice stuff in ur handbag and sadly...most of those people pulling this are locals...its a way of life for some so just be really careful. being on springbreak, vacation doesnt make u immune to people trying to take advantage
The guy at OXXO tried to give me $5 back instead of $15 because he thought I was drunk and didn't notice. Bus drivers kept saying we weren't giving them enough change when I KNOW that I gave them 15 pesos for the both of us. I watch my stuff carefully, so nothing got stolen. But some locals were staring at us weird when we were walking back to our resort, and the one night, a guy followed us and stopped his pick up truck right in front of La Isla (across from our resort) at 4 am and we ran like hell across the street. I thought he was going to try something shady.
wow, I got free bus rides half the time I was there. Never dropped money in the plate and he didnt care. Once I ddint even pay for a cab ride with a few guys I met. They handed him the money, and then he sped off before I could dig mine outta my pocket. ALl the locals I met were really nice save a few bartenders on the booze cruise!
