The new 40,000 sq m terminal will have 15 departure gates and 84 check-in counters, and will operate alongside the airport's current terminal, through which some 9.8mn passengers currently pass every year. The new terminal will double the current terminal's 2,200 people/h peak capacity to 4,400 people/h. Average daily operations will nearly double from 266 to 450. Cancún saw international passenger traffic grow 51.7% in January compared to the same month in 2006, mainly due to its partial recovery from damage inflicted by Hurricane Wilma in October 2005.
