Tom I have never been "visited" or spoken to them either. But all my neighbors and everyone in my development has had them. You clean it off and behold, another one appears. I can assure you they are not gang markings or anything like that. They appeared at all 3 of the apartments I've lived and I'm not the only one who has seen them. I'd prefer it if people said it was the aluxes vs. gangs or thieves. Anyhooo....I've already bitched about this somewhere else... http://mexicoquoteunquoteway.blogspot.com/2008/06/wtf-is-this-graffiti-bs.html
Just curious......that's all I'm not saying what they might or might not be, I'm just curious as to what it means and whom felt it necessary to put it there. It's just part of our learning process of our new adopted country.........it's all good!
Elizabeth is correct. count the people that live there (Ie; 2 adults, 3 kids) Other wise it is a census code or water inspection. They are a pain in the ass to clean off (My walls are white). we can worry about everything or do something, check out Steve's experience.
Being Mexico, the health workers didn't need to talk to you or even have accurate info. They may have gone by what seemed reasonable and passable to fill their job duties for the day. They may have a sense from the neighbors who lve nearby as well. It's possible, like many others, they don't care. They also don't have many sanitary issues to worry about with gringos, whereas they will spend a lot of time on many poorer Mexican households. When they catch me, they often say they wishes all the homes they dealt with were gringos!
You know that I definitely don't know what the markings mean, but I found it really coincidental that Steve had his unfortunate experience and mentioned how the policia commented on the markings. And Tom lives within eye shot of Steve's home.
I've personally seen the health dept writing that cryptic stuff on my wall. Once they leave I wash it off. The key to staying safe here is to stay off the radar of the thieves, don't flaunt your wealth. You may still be targeted but the less they think you have the better.
