hope he has insurance to cover all the medical expense, but i think he should at least try to consult with a lawyer or something to see if he can get any recovery.. i mean afterall, this is very bad injury.

Actually you CAN sue when a person is injured even if it is an accident.

There's a l;ot of factors to consider but just because soemthing was not intended does not mean that someone is not liable for the outcome.

Most cases of this kind involve neglience. That is definitely a cause of action from a legal standpoint.
