Dany mentioned to me that the bus fare was recently raised from 6.5 pesos to 7 pesos in the hotel zone. The downtown buses have gone from 4.5 pesos to 5 pesos.
It's true. Just happened a few days ago I got on and didn't pay enough...had to pay the new 7 pesos. Paper taped on the buses not lists the new price as the 7 pesos. Still a good way to get around tho.
Taxis have gone up in the last couple of months too. What was usually a 15 peso ride is now 18 (or 20, depending on whether the driver is a jerk or not). That's killer for us, we added it up and it's about 500 extra pesos a month!! On our limited budget, it's a lot of money.
City Hall confiscated all of the buses of the company that was charging the increased fare since the increase had not been approved by the City Council yet. They are negotiating--and taking quotes from other compnaies like ADO who want to provide the service. They do this from time to time although this is the first time the government has called their bluff and actually stopped them. Crappy buses, not enough of them and dangerous drivers--and there should be an increase WHY???
A maintenance schedule wouldn't be a bad thing, instead of drive it until it dies and fix it on the side of the road.
